Lightroom simplifies alot of things that can be done manually with more control in PS. And that's fine - Adobe would like you to buy both programs. For an image I might need different grain for different areas - one for skin texture, others for garments, and others for sky or background.

LR's impementation wouldn't be able to handle that. I feel that using the actual image grain is the best way to go. My main point about the workarounds is that i don't have a consistent non-destructive way to accomplish pretty grain.I actually try to work as non-destructive as possible with my pictures as this established for me to be the most flexible way to work with image files.I usually do it with a grey 'soft light' Smart-object i put a noise and a blur on to adjust size and roughness.Would be handy to have one Smart Filter where you can easily readjust settings at one place. Alien skin exposure is kind of non-destructive - you have to copy merge a new layer then smart object that one. Reopening it will give you the alien skin dialogue.so yes using the plugin will keep all of the settings adjustable and in one place. Its not cheap software but lightyears better than anything PS offers out of the box. I usually like to do effects manually but this plugin has so many features and effects, they really put alot of research into it. You can use it in LR too.i do recommend checking out making your own patterns for grain and other things. Once I learned I use it for alot of stuff.
